The Choirs of Christ Church comprise a nearly cradle- to-grave opportunity for musical training, fellowship and for our ultimate purpose, divine worship. Our affiliation with the Royal School of Church Music sets an international benchmark for excellence in our choral program and provides individual choristers and the parish music staff with resources for achieving that goal. Our choral program emphasizes music from the great Western tradition of choral music for the church with occasional forays into repertoire from around the world.
The Cherub Choir is a place for beginning. All children in the Kindergarten and First Grade are invited to sing in the Cherub Choir. We experience the joy of singing God’s praises while developing musical skills and exploring the world of sound. The Cherub Choir meets on Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 PM in the Choir Room.
The Primary Choir prepares children in the Second and Third Grades for membership in the Junior Choir by honing those basic skills acquired in the Cherub Choir in conjunction with the natural burgeoning of written language skills that these children experience in their schools and with the faith formation that they encounter in our Sunday School. The Primary Choir sings occaisionally during the Sunday Morning Eucharist and on major holidays of the liturgical Kalendar. The Primary Choir rehearses Wednesdays at 4:00 PM in the Choir Room.
The Junior Choir is an opportunity for youngsters in the Fourth through Eighth Grades to continue developing musical and liturgical skills in preparation for membership in the Senior Choir. The Junior Choir sings anthems and special service music regularly throughout the choral season on both Sunday mornings and on major feast days, as the children ”learn the ropes” of leading musical liturgy. The Junior Choir rehearses on Wednesdays at 4:30 PM and on Sundays when they sing at 9 am in the church. All rehearsals take place in the Choir Room.
The Senior Choir sings at all principal liturgies from early September through June. Comprised of a schola of professional singers with a core group of dedicated volunteer singers, this ensemble sings a wide variety of music throughout each choral season. Our repertoire ranges from the earliest written music (Gregorian chant) through Renaissance polyphony, the Classical and Romantic eras, twentieth century masterpieces and music newly composed for today’s church. Twice in each season, we offer Evensong liturgies on Sunday afternoons. Also, twice in each season, we present concerts of choral music in conjunction with the Friiends of Music at Christ Church. Our repertoire spans the centuries - from early Renaissance to Mozart; Bach to Brahms; Britten to Stravinsky. We sing in most every western language. Mostly, we sing because of our shared love of music and our desire to share our gifts together.
